The Constitution of the United States is the supreme law of the land. It is the framework for the U.S. government and for the relationship of the federal government with the states, citizens and all the people within the U.S.
The Constitution was adopted on September 17, 1787 at the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It has 27 amendments; the first ten amendments are known as the "Bill of Rights." The first three Articles of the Constitution establish the three branches of the national government: legislative (Congress), executive (led by the President), and judicial (headed by the Supreme Court).
The U.S. Constitution is the second oldest written constitution still in use by any nation in the world, after the 1600 Statutes of San Marino. The original document is on display at the National Archives and Records Administration in Washington, D.C.
