Before you apply for citizenship you must meet a few general requirements:

  • Be at least 18-years old
    Be a permanent resident in the United States for at least 5 years. (3 years if you are married to a U.S. citizen.)

  • Show that you have lived for at least 3 months in the state or USCIS district where you claim residence.

  • Be able to understand, read, write and speak basic English*

  • Have a basic understanding of U.S. history and its government

  • Have a good moral character


*Exceptions to the English language requirement if you:

•Are 50 years of age and 20 years as permanent resident.

•Are 55 years of age and 15 years as a permanent resident.

•Are 65 years of age and 20 years as a permanent resident, you also qualify for a simpler exam.
